Field and Stream Editor in Chief
As the new Chief Editor of Field and Stream, I have several ideas on what to add to the website as well as the writing for the website to make it a better and more clear format for readers and editors alike. To start off, I believe that the voice in the writing should be a bit more clear. Sometimes when reading the articles, figuring out the point of view for who is writing and when can be a challenge. I would tell future writers to emphasize point of view as it can make reading and understanding much more clear. Tone is actually very present, and many writers have a good premise when it comes to setting the tone for their articles. In terms of elements and features to promote use, I would emphasize on seasons to stay updated. An example of this would be if it is brown trout season, do more writing on brown trout season because readers are probably fishing brown trout at the same time the article is being published. A plus is that graphics and visuals are spot on. The way that many authors put them in their articles is perfect for reading pace and spacing balance. Navigation is also perfect. The navigation on the website when it comes to finding what you want to read about is spotless. The tabs on the top that organize content are perfect and should not be moved or changed at all. When it comes to elements such as graphics, navigation, and metaphorical elements, they should not be changed. The structure of the website itself is great, but the work needs to be done in the writing and articles themselves. Consistent tone is also spot on, and it is easy to understand in many of the articles. Another aspect that I think is flawless and should not be changed is the dimensions matching the audiences. Field and Stream in many ways has both a very broad and specific audience. The broad audience is the outdoorsman that read the articles and the specific audiences are the outdoorsman that read the articles and have a specific interest such as hunting or fishing for specific animals. The layouts also make sure that the readers and the audience have an easy way to find their area of interest. However, one aspect that I think needs work is consistency. As of recently, there has been a shortage of annual articles posted. Because of social media, the amount of blogs and articles posted on Field and Stream has been falling behind over the past few years. More consistent posting is something that needs to be brought back. Annual articles, updates on seasons, and more consistent posting is something that needs to be worked on more. There has been a loss of readers due to inactive posting, and that is a very important aspect to bring back to the website. Tone and voice, writing quality, and organization are definitely our strengths. Our flaws that we need to fix is our posting consistency, timing, and speaker perspective.
